Opel has purchased important regional wireless licenses from Austar. Opel, a joint venture between Optus and Elders, has been under pressure to show how its use of wireless technology would operate in regional areas. The regional wireless licenses are for spectrum better suited to the WiMAX technology to be used.This announcement allays fear that Opel would not succeed in its effort to build a regional network competing with Telstra's 3.5G network and other broadband offerings. The deal is subject to ongoing discussions between Opel and the new Australian Federal Government.
